After escaping a close call in her singles match against Peyton Stearns, Marketa Vondrousova was seen sobbing in the cool-down area. Throughout Monday’s three-set victory, the No. 9 player in the world was battling an injury. She then withdrew from the women’s doubles match with Barbora Strycova, who is taking part in her final competition before retiring.
When Vondrousova began to grab her back and shoulder after losing the first set of her singles match against Stearns, there was cause for concern. At 3-2 in the second set, the 24-year-old was on the verge of tears when she took some pills, but they appeared to work since she recovered to win 6-7(3) 6-3 6-2.
