The only surviving British player at this year’s US Open, Jack Draper, has a challenging opponent to advance to the quarterfinals.
The 21-year-old had to defeat American Michael Mmoh to advance to the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time. The next challenge for Draper is a difficult contest against Andrey Rublev, who has advanced to the final eight of a Grand Slam eight times.
There were real concerns that he wouldn’t be able to even participate, so it’s amazing he’s made it this far in the US Open. His progress has been slowed by injuries in 2023, and even a shoulder injury forced him to skip Wimbledon.
Even the number one player in the world, Carlos Alcaraz, offered encouragement and support to Draper. Retired British star Laura Robson disclosed it during an interview and stated: “I was actually speaking to Jack Draper back in Miami after he’d had to pull out of the tournament there having injured himself in Indian Wells.”
She further added: “He was getting texts from Carlos saying, ‘Let me know if you need anything. Reach out if you want to have a chat about how you’re feeling, about having so many injuries on and off.’ And just got the situation. And Jack’s got nothing but good things to say about him. But I can’t think of anyone who has got a bad thing to say about him.”
