What a match from Serena Williams!
The world no.1 was trashed in the opening set (6-1) to finally grab a tough win. Serena had to cope with an in-form Sloane Stephens that showed a high degree of maturity after battling in every single set agasint her childhood hero.
After winning the first set in just 23 minutes, Sloane got a 5-4 lead in the second. Serena eventually managed to win 3 consecutive games from there to bring the match to the decider. At that point we expected Sloane to melt down, but the young American was always there to make Serena’s life as difficult as possible. Eventually the world no.1 won 1-6 7-5 6-3. Match Stats.

Serena: I am disappointed
The American wasn’t very happy with her performance “I felt like if I had made a shot here or made a shot there, then maybe the first set could have been different. But today I started out slowly, even though I was really warmed up and really ready. But it’s not how you start, I guess it’s how you finish. That’s kind of how I’m looking at it.
Obviously I’m disappointed. Usually I’m winning in straight sets, and I’m business both on and off the court. Now I’m just winning, and that’s a good thing too, but there’s always room for improvement.”
Serena has won the last 3 matches all in 3 sets and recovering from a set down, she needs to have a better start.
Next vs. Errani
Serena will play Sara Errani in the quarters. Head to head is 8-0 for the American that is expected to have an easy one.
