TIME VIOLATION. Why Coco Gauff was so upset with the umpire in her first round match at the US Open

The chair umpire and Coco Gauff got into a heated argument during their 2023 US Open first-round match between Gauff and Laura Siegemund.

Gauff gets into argument with the umpire

At the US Open’s 2023 first-round match between Coco Gauff and Laura Siegemund, Gauff got into a heated exchange with the chair umpire about the German’s delay in preparing to return service.

At Flushing Meadows, Gauff started her season with an impressive comeback victory over Siegemund. On Monday, August 28, the 19-year-old battled back after dropping the first set 3-6 to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in 2 hours and 51 minutes.

In the third set, the match took a dramatic turn when Coco Gauff complained to the chair umpire that Siegemund was taking too long to prepare to return. The World No. 6 claimed that the German had repeatedly avoided time violations during the course of the match.

Gauff complained to the chair umpire and said: “She’s never ready when I’m serving. She went over the clock like four times, you gave her a time violation once. How is this fair? No, you’re calling the score after the point is over.”

She added: “It’s not like we’re playing a lot of points. You’re calling the score like six seconds after the point is over. You’ve missed her like four times. She’s never ready. It’s not like we’re having 30-ball rallies. It’s two balls.”

Gauff instantly responded when the chair umpire remarked on her quickness, claiming that she kept a regular time of play.
