RG on Federer’s scare: Roger’s reaction is perfectly understandable

Strange enough Roger Federer‘s opener has been stained by a kid that entered the court soon after the match asking for a selfie. Roger was visibly displeased by the accident to ask for a better security. (see article)

Roger’s reaction is perfectly understandable

Gilbert Ysern, the director of the Roland Garros, had to step in to share his point of view on the official site of the Roland Garros.

“This shouldn’t happen, and we must do everything to avoid this type of incident”, said Gilbert Ysern, director of Roland-Garros.

“In tennis, the players are closer to the spectators. Today, the players are accessible and it is important that they are. But this must be well organised and kept under control. There is a designated time [for fans] to be close to the players during autograph or photo sessions. The players are more than willing. But the court is sacred. It is forbidden to step onto it at any time, for any reason. Every spectator must be aware of that.”

“This incident was clearly due to an error of judgment [by a member of the security team]. But there is no reason to change the security system. We have the staff we need, and they are sufficient in number. They are trained, debriefed, and prepared. However, we must ensure the message is understood, so we have stressed its importance once more. The incident this afternoon does not mean that the risk is higher. If the person had entered the court with an aggressive demeanour, they would never have got to the player. We have sufficient staff around the court to avoid that. The players are always safe.”

Roger’s reaction is perfectly understandable. With the elegance he is known for, he did not react with annoyance. He is upset because what happened should not have. He was not afraid, but this should not happen. It is normal to comment if the organisation is not seamless”.

Gilbert Ysern added that he went to Roger to personally apologize about what has happened.
