Nishikori, Wawrinka start the FO campaign in style

Easy stuff for Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka in the French Open first round.

Nishikori

Kei faced world no.123 Mathieu in the opener to win 6-3 7-5 6-1 in 2 hours and 10 minutes. The Japanese had a solid match with a couple of blimps only in the second set when he was broken twice in a row. Besides that everything was smooth for Kei that broke his opponent twice in the first and second set

Kei commented “I think it was solid match. In the second set he started playing much better. He was hitting the ball pretty well, especially his backhand. But after that I was playing some good tennis on the court and I think it’s not easy to win in straight sets. So there are some ups and downs and I think I fought through pretty well.”

Kei will play either Matosevic or Bellucci in the second round.

Wawrinka

Stan had a very easy match against world no. 82 Marsel Ilhan from Turkey. The Swiss won 6-3 6-2 6-3 in just 1 hour and 36 minutes.

Stan was very happy for the start of his campaign “It was a great start, a good match, [I’m] feeling the ball well. I had only one hour of practice here in Paris, so I’m really happy to play that way already. My game is there. I’m feeling great on the clay since few weeks now. ‘[I] got the confidence back and [I’m] playing well. So I’m happy to get through in three sets.”

Stan will play Dusan Lajovic in the second round. Head to head is 1-0 for Stan.

Head to head Lajovic Wawrinka
