Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, and Paula Badosa, the former World No. 2, have pulled out of the US Open following injuries.
Venus Williams and Badosa were scheduled to face off in the tournament’s opening round on Tuesday. Now, Williams must either defeat a qualifier or a lucky loser. Since being forced to quit from her Wimbledon second-round match owing to a back injury, the Spaniard has been unable to compete.
End of season for Badosa
Badosa said on social media that she had to end her season due to the injury. Badosa wrote: “After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We have tried everything together with my team but the pain is not letting me move forward.”
Andreescu suffered a stress fracture in her back while playing hard courts in Montreal and Washington, D.C. She was forced to leave Cincinnati due to an injury, but she hoped to be allowed to play in the US Open.
Paula Badosa in 2023
Ranked world no.46, the Spaniard played her last match on the 7th of July when she had to retire when playing against world no.37 Marta Kostyuk in the 2nd round and the scoreline was 6-2 1-0 .
This year Badosa achieved a compiled 18-9 win-loss record. Paula Badosa’s most significant accomplishment of the current season was reaching the semifinal in Adelaide.
Bianca Andreescu in 2023
Currently ranked no.51, Bianca played her last match on the 8th of August when she capitulated to world no.52 Camila Giorgi 6-3 6-2 in the 1st round in Montreal (draw).
Currently, during this season Bianca achieved a compiled 15-16 record. Bianca Andreescu’s most significant accomplishment of the year was reaching the semifinal in Hua Hin.
Paula Badosa and Bianca Andreescu have never clashed against each other.
