Andreescu Withdraws From Us Open

Bianca Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, and Paula Badosa, the former World No. 2, have pulled out of the US Open following injuries.

Venus Williams and Badosa were scheduled to face off in the tournament’s opening round on Tuesday. Now, Williams must either defeat a qualifier or a lucky loser. Since being forced to quit from her Wimbledon second-round match owing to a back injury, the Spaniard has been unable to compete.

End of season for Badosa

Badosa said on social media that she had to end her season due to the injury. Badosa wrote: “After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision. We have tried everything together with my team but the pain is not letting me move forward.”

Andreescu suffered a stress fracture in her back while playing hard courts in Montreal and Washington, D.C. She was forced to leave Cincinnati due to an injury, but she hoped to be allowed to play in the US Open.
