Coco Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova to win her first WTA 1000 tournament and third singles trophy of the year. The North American hardcourt swing has seen Gauff’s tennis uprise; during this stretch, she has won 11 of the 12 matches she has played. Additionally, she took home the Washington Citi Open earlier this month.

The US Open, which starts on Monday, is Gauff’s next target. Her best-ever performance at the Grand Slam saw her go to the quarterfinals last year. Gauff should anticipate a lot of fan support because she is the second-ranked American on the women’s Tour. Gauff thinks the secret to living up to their expectations is to put herself first.

Gauff explained her position during a conversation:I think the biggest thing that I’ve learned is that everybody’s path for you is not what’s true, it’s not what’s going to happen. Even the path that you want for yourself may not happen. I’m going to give it my all at the US Open. If things go great, that’s exciting. If not, I go back and work hard and get ready for the next one. That’s kind of the mentality you have to have.”

Gauff clearly acknowledges that her game is still a work in progress. She started working with Pere Riba earlier this summer, and Brad Gilbert also serves as a consultant.
