Gauff and Swiatek competed in the WTA 1000 competition on Saturday, August 19, for a place in the final. Gauff had previously dropped 14 straight sets against Swiatek and ended her losing run after winning the first set in a tiebreak.
During the press conference after the match, Coco Gauff discussed her maiden victory over Swiatek and expressed her relief at not having a comparable record to Gael Monfils’ 0-19 against Novak Djokovic.
Gauff said: “It feels good. To be honest, I don’t know if I was thinking too far ahead. No offense to Gael, but I did not want that record, like the Novak and Gael record. I didn’t want that.”
Gauff said she was more confident in her ability to compete against the best after the victory.
