Shapovalov has withdrawn from the U.S. Open. The tennis player shared the news on social media on Wednesday.
Shapovalov said that while he had done everything in his power to stay healthy for the Grand Slam match, his knee injury still needs more time to heal. Due to the same issue, the 24-year-old withdrew from the most recent National Bank Open in Toronto.
Shapovalov hasn’t competed since July 9, when he was defeated by Roman Safiullin at Wimbledon in the fourth round. His best Grand Slam performance there two years prior was reaching the semifinals.
The quarterfinals of the 2020 U.S. Open were Shapovalov’s finest performance there. He rose as high as No. 10 in the world rankings before falling to No. 22 at the moment.
Despite doing everything possible to be 100% healthy in time for @usopen, my knee needs more time and I sadly have to withdraw. That grand slam energy, especially in NYC, is unlike anything else and I’m really going to miss playing in front of the amazing fans there this year! 💔 pic.twitter.com/aQmAvF7DUs
