Why I decided to coach Alexander Zverev. IVAN LENDL

The tennis legend reveals why he decided to make a move and coach one of the most interesting prospects on tour.

Ivan Lendl and Alexander Zverev

At 21 years of age, Sascha Zverev is one of the most interesting players on tour.

The German has already conquered 10 titles, 3 Master ATP1000s, and the prestigious ATP Finals. Sascha is currently ranked no.3, but he is struggling to do 1 thing: going deep in slams.

Andy Murray had a similar issue in his early days, but at that time he was “stopped” by the Big 3 (Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic). Zverev doesn’t have (yet) this problem since he lost to a “big3” only once in slams and that was 2 years ago when he was stopped by Rafael Nadal in Melbourne. The German struggles in the early rounds of the slams and with not-so-high-ranked players and this is something that he needs to correct.

Therefore, Sascha decided to partner with Ivan Lendl hoping to get the same “secret recipe” that helped Murray to win 3 slams finally.

Why Ivan Lendl decided to coach Alexander Zverev

During a recent interview with the Blesk, Lendl commented

“I know well all his family. I faced his father in Maribor in 1976. I think I won, but I do not remember. It was the right moment to be back coaching. If I waited for five more years, I would have been too old.”

Apparently, Ivan and Sascha’s father played once as junior tennis players, in the semifinals of the European under-18 championships in Maribor [Yugoslavia] and the result was 6-3, 6-3. for Lendl that was “too good.”

Life goes in circles.
