Since the introduction of the so-called “celebrity-coaches,” it was well clear that one of the most important help that they could give to their players was their tactical and psychological insights.
In fact, for the likes of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray it’s a huge added value to get counseling from players that have been in their positions in the past such as Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, and Ivan Lendl.
Why Andy Murray hired Ivan Lendl
Back in the days, Andy Murray was struggling to reach the “last mile” at the slams before the help of Ivan mostly because he had to face the formidable barrage of the Big 3. Therefore, in their partnership, Lendl decided to focus on how to get over that hurdle.
During an interview with Blesk, Ivan revealed
“I worked with Andy not on technique but mainly on how to play Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal.
When we sat down for the first time, we said what he had to do differently against these three players. Then he believed in himself a lot more.”
Murray and Lendl partnered between 2012 and 2014 when the Brit won the US Open and Wimbledon and then in 2016 before Murray won his second Wimbledon and he had an incredible run that culminated with ending the season as the world no.1.
