In his opening match at the Western & Southern Open, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jordan Thompson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to earn his 50th victory of the year in a personal best time.

Alcaraz’s tired performance in the first set, which included 26 unforced errors, continued into the third set, which began just before 12:30 a.m. before he recovered. Alcaraz needed a ninth break point in the eighth game of the first set to finally break through after failing to convert four break points on either side of the break.

After breaking Thompson in the final game and playing much better tennis than in the first two sets, he finished the match 5/17 on break chances.

After the match, Alcaraz stated these remarks in a conversation: “It wasn’t an easy match but I found my best level at the end. We were waiting around all day to play the match and then when you step on the court you have to start with the rain, so it wasn’t easy. But you have to find a way to win these matches in this type of situation.”

After the match, Alcaraz made an emoji on a camera with the first relishing sign but it seems he wasn’t quite happy with his performance.
