Jessica Pegula defeated Liudmila Samsonova of Russia by 6-1, 6-0 on Sunday night in Montreal to claim the Canadian Open trophy.
The triumph finishes out a successful week for Pegula, who defeated world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Pegula became the first American woman to win the Canadian Open trophy since Serena Williams in 2013 by taking home her maiden victory of the year.
After winning the title, the American Pegula talked about her tough opponents in the tournament Iga Swiatke and Coco Gauff. Pegula said: “Beating Coco [Gauff] and Iga were two really tough wins back-to-back.”
She further added: “Being able to do that and then just come out today and play a really clean match was kind of great. I felt like I didn’t have a ton of pressure at any point or I wasn’t worried too much today.”

Currently the world no.3 (career-high), Pegula played her last match on the 13th of August when she overcame world no.12 Ludmilla Samsonova 6-1 6-0 in the final in Montreal to win her 4th career title.
Until now, during this year Jessica has a 42-13 win-loss record. The American conquered 2 titles in 2023 in Australia and Montreal. Pegula was the runner-up in Doha.
Coco Gauff in 2023
Ranked world no.7, Gauff played her last match on the 11th of August when she lost to world no.3 Jessica Pegula 6-2 5-7 7-5 in the quarter in Montreal (draw).
Until now, during this year the American has managed to achieve a 33-13 record. Gauff clinched 2 titles in 2023 in Auckland and Washington.
Gauff is scheduled to play next at the U.S. Open (U.S. Open). She will start from the main draw that will commence on the 28th of August.
