Less than a month after losing in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament, American tennis player Coco Gauff thanked God after winning the Citi DC Open women’s final.
Gauff defeated Maria Sakkari by 6-2, 6-3, and won her maiden WTA-500 victory and fourth singles championship in the Mubadala Citi DC Open.
Gauff shared her thoughts after winning Citi DC Open: “First, I’d like to thank my Father, God for this. After losing in first-round Wimbledon, it was a tough situation. You know, a lot of prayers and a lot of support from my church family. So thank you to Him and those who support me.”
Gauff had previously spoken out about her faith publicly before Sunday’s victory. In a 2019 article for a magazine, she acknowledged that she prays before every match, a habit she adopted from her father.
She said: “Before every match, since I was 8, my dad and I say a prayer together. We don’t really pray about victory, just that me and my opponent stay safe. After the match, I was just thanking God for this opportunity.”
The 19-year-old tennis sensation has gained popularity in recent years after being the youngest Wimbledon qualifier in history in 2019.
