In the second round of the Canadian Open, Gael Monfils defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas, continuing his comeback, and he celebrated by sending his daughter Skai a loving note.
Just over two months ago, Monfils was ranked No. 394 in the ATP Rankings following his injury troubles in 2022. He has made steady improvement, though, and is now ranked 276 after making it to the final 16 at the Citi DC Open last week.
Monfils victory was even more impressive and celebrating because he beat Stefanos Tsitsipas, who defended his title at Los Cabos recently. Monfils said after the match: “I knew that Stef had a lot of confidence. He would try to go for his shots. I tried to put a lot of balls in, tried to hit quite heavy, and not let him dictate too much. I think I did it well.”
After the match, Monfils left his daughter a heartfelt note by writing “Gnite Skai” on the camera lens.

Ranked no.276, Monfils has managed to achieve an overall 6-9 record in 2023. The French player is competing in Toronto where he managed to beat the world no.29 Christopher Eubanks 7-63 6-74 6-1 and the world no.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-3.
Gael Monfils will face the world no.62 Aleksandar Vukic in the 3rd round on Thursday at 4:30 pm on GRANDSTAND. They have never competed against each other up to now in top events.

Monfils is scheduled to play next in Cincinnati (Western & Southern Open). He will begin to play the tournament from the main draw that will commence on the 13th of August thanks to a protected ranking.
