What a match between Serena Williams and Vika Azarenka!
What happened
After a rough encounter, Vika was leading a very tough match 6-7 (5) 6-3 6-5 40-0… yes she had 3 consecutive match points on her serve and she couldn’t make it.
Serena blasted a couple of shots … more like “OK it’s over… who cares?” to bring the game to a funny 40-30 score-line. That was the time for Vika to melt and commit 3 consecutive double faults (!!!) and give back the break to Serena.
Eventually there was nothing to see in the tie-break as the Belarusian was destroyed for wasting her chances and Serena won the breaker at 1. The final result was 6-7 (5) 6-3 7-6 (1. Match Stats.
Serena: Vika is on her way back
The American was a gracious winner (not a surprise) “She’s absolutely on her way back. It’s so good to see a Grand Slam champion like her playing so well. I’m always rooting for her when she plays. Yeah, so it’s good to see her on her way back – she’s clearly doing great.”
Vika: It didn’t go my way
The former world no.1 was still “happy” “I think overall it was a great match, I think the one negative part I can take about today is the result – overall I felt like I played a pretty high level, I was there on every point.
It just didn’t go my way in the end, but overall I should take more positives out of today.”
Next vs. Suarez-Navarro
Serena will play home favourite Carla Suarez-Navarro. Head to head is 5-0 for Serena, but this could be challenging.
