Coco Gauff made an impressive comeback to win a WTA tournament in Washington, after an extensive downturn in results and performances.
The young American tennis champion eventually broke free after returning from a challenging period. The final featured a balanced match, but there was no narrative, as Coco defeated the Greek Maria Sakkari in straight sets.
Coco Guff said she wished to thank God and her father for the victory while clearly touched during the press conference and expressed her feelings: “I want to thank my Father, God for this. After losing 1st round Wimbledon it was a tough situation. A lot of prayers, a lot of support from my church family. So thank you to him & those who support me.”
Gauff had kind remarks for Maria Sakkari, her Greek opponent in the final match, and said: “All the words she said about me is really all I could say about her. She’s 1 of the players I look up to on tour, to be honest. I remember first coming on Tour and she was 1 of the nicest people. Thank you for being the person you are.”
