Gauff won the Mubadala Citi DC Open final against Maria Sakkari 6-2, 6-3 to win her maiden WTA 500 tournament.
Gauff beat Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon in 2019, and from that point on, she was a star, and the responsibility that comes with it bore heavily on her young shoulders.
Gauff has done well given the expectations placed on her to remain in the top ten of the WTA rankings and to lead the doubles standings. With the support of temporary consultant Brad Gilbert and new coach Pere Riba in Washington, Gauff was able to clearly find a winning direction.
Gauff appreciated her team after the win and said: “It’s our first tournament as a full team. I’m glad that we were able to make this result. Thank you for sticking with me. I know those who were with me at Wimbledon, it was really tough. I’m glad I was able to bounce back.”
If this is the start of a winning streak for Gauff, women’s tennis will receive an incredible boost. The sport needs some big personalities to step forward and make their mark.
