American No. 7 in the world Coco Gauff recalls the early stages of her career when being black had a lot of negative effects on her. She discussed her tough times and how she overcame them to advance to her current level as a world-class player in a recent interview. Gauff, who is now competing in the Washington Open in her native nation, has advanced to the second round after defeating Hailey Baptiste, another Black woman from that nation.

Coco commented: “I’m excited to play Hailey because when I was little there weren’t a lot of Black women in the lower categories. We had to deal with a lot of crap you don’t know. For us, being here on the circuit today means a lot. I’m excited because it reminds me of the big dreams we had as girls and I hope Hailey and I play a lot more times to be that representation. I see a lot of girls in the stands and I hope it will be more and more common in our sport.”
