Roger Federer is about to play the Miami Open final and he explains why winning tournaments is his priority

Roger Federer explaining why he is not chasing world no.1 rank

Roger Federer has already won 100 tournaments, and it seems that he has no intention of stopping chasing titles and, probably, Jimmy Connors’ record (109 titles).

The Swiss Maestro is about to play the Miami Open final against John Isner and if he wins he will also lead the Year to Date rankings that are an excellent indicator on how the season is going.

Why Federer is not focussed on the world no.1 rank

During the press conference following his win over Denis Shapovalov in the semifinal, the Swiss Maestro explained why he is chasing titles and not the world no.1 rank.

He commented

“Winning tournaments [it’s the most important thing] because world no.1 is going to be very difficult. For that, I need almost 3 slams at this level, no way, and in the same calendar year and that’s just gonna be very difficult. I think it’s not reasonable to think that way at 37.

I think it was one of my favorite moments of my life last year in Rotterdam when I was able to get back to world no.1 at 36 having won the Australian, Wimbledon and that being in the same year and the Sunshine Double [Indian Wells and Miami] and all that stuff it just aligned itself so beautifully. Those were special times for me.

The world no.1 is so far away, and Novak has just won 3 slams so I think I would be a bit of a joke if I said that was my goal.”

That’s a very good explanation, but it’s going to be interesting to see if Roger will stay near the top of the Year to Date rankings by September if he is going to switch his goal later in the season.
