Miami Open. Ashleigh Barty wins the Miami Open after beating Karolina Pliskova in straight set to claim her 4th and most important career title.

How Barty defeated Pliskova

The Australian didn’t start the final in the best possible way to concede her serve already in the 4th game (1-3). However, after breaking back in the 6th game (3-3), she dropped just 1 point in the following tiebreak to get a 1-set-up lead.

The second set was much smoother for the Australian that broke Karolina immediately after a very long game (1-0). The 22-year-old started to become extremely solid on serve, and she conceded just 2 points in the second set while Pliskova was constantly struggling on serve. Eventually, Ashleigh broke the Czech again in the 9th game to win the match 7-6 (1) 6-3  after 99 minutes.

What was crucial for Barty to beat Pliskova

After the match, Ashleigh commented

“It was going to be a match of small opportunities. I think I was able to claw my way back into the first set and take an opportunity when I got it in the tie-break.

I think it was important for me to try and get that first set. I think that first set today was going to be massive. I was able to get a bit of a roll on in the second early and keep the foot down.”
