MIAMI OPEN. Roger Federer is currently in Miami where he is trying to win the title at this prestigious Master ATP1000.

Recently, the tennis community got the sad news that the entertaining Hopman Cup will not take place in 2020.

Why the Hopman Cup was canceled

The Hopman Cup was axed to “give space” to the ATP World Team Cup that will also be hosted in Perth. This means that the Hopman Cup will cease to exist after 31 years, at least for the time being.

Why Roger Federer was sad

During a press conference in Miami, Roger explained why he was sad when he heard the news

“Well, I mean, similar to this situation here, you know. We’re not in Key Biscayne anymore. But let’s say you’re not in Perth anymore for Hopman Cup, and this is where it has always been. This is where the spirit is or was, will always be.

Maybe in 50 years, we’ll talk differently. Right now obviously it’s a bit sad news that that’s happening. Has it been announced Perth gets the ATP Cup, though?

I enjoyed the last three years playing there. I played there with Mirka, too. With Martina [Hingis]. I look back, always had a wonderful time. Yeah, I don’t know what to say. I’m a bit torn. So that’s it.”

Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic won the Hopman Cup the last 2 years and also Belinda tweeted: “This makes me sad.”

IT WAS LOTS OF FUN
