Naomi Osaka to stay world no.1 after the Miami Open

Naomi Osaka will stay at the top of the rankings after Simona Halep lost in the Miami Open semifinal

Naomi Osaka stays world no.1

Naomi Osaka didn’t have a great run at this Sunshine Double after she lost in the 4th round in Indian Wells (d. by Belinda Bencic) and in the 3rd in Miami (d. by Su-Wei Hsieh).

After her demise in Florida, the world no.1 was very close to losing her world no.1 ranked in favor of either Simona Halep or Petra Kvitova.

However, Naomi got lucky after Petra Kvitova lost to Ashleigh Barty in the quarter-final and Simona Halep was defeated in the semifinal by Karolina Pliskova after Simona was leading 5-3. The Romanian had to win this match against Karolina Pliskova to regain to top of the rankings.

Why Naomi Osaka will stay no.1

After this Miami Open, Osaka will have 6,021 pts, Halep 5,782 pts, and Kvitova 5,645.

Naomi may have been lucky this time, but she needs to start to win again if she wants to stay at the top of the rankings.
