Monfils upsets Federer

Gael Monfils did it again!

It seems that the eccentric Frenchman has the magic recipe against Roger Federer. Gael managed to beat Roger already 3 times before Monte-Carlo and he added another one.

The match was quite strange as the Frenchman decided from the very beginning to play a regular game (not in his DNA). It was a sort of “shoot whatever you have… I am here”. Federer didn’t seem very worried at the beginning to race to a 3-1 lead, but after breaking Gael in the 4th game the Maestro suddenly became more passive and Monfils’ strategy started to work well. The Frenchman won 5 of the following 6 games to win the opener 6-4. In the second set the match went straight to the tiebreak when Federer squandered a 5-3 lead losing 4 consecutive points. The final result was 6-4 7-6 (5). Match Stats.

Roger had a lot to regret “It was not the best end to the match. I should have done better with the break up in the first. I think I did a good job to hang around the second set. I also had chances of my own. It remained close, but I never felt like things were really happening the way I wanted them to be going during the whole match.”

Monfils will play Dimitrov in the quarters. Head to head is 2-1 for Gael.
