Dayana Yastremska recently suffered a straightforward 6-0 6-2 loss in Lausanne against 16-year-old phenom Mirra Andreeva, but there was more to the outcome. In a statement, Yastremska pleaded with the WTA to punish Andreeva for some of the posts she shared earlier this week.

Apparently, these jokes included President Vladimir Putin making fun of Ukraine and having Andreeva’s handle visible.

This was the open letter from Dayana:

“I wanted to post about a recent situation in Switzerland which I find hardly acceptable.
The tennis instances are unfortunately remaining indifferent to the atrocities committed in Ukraine.

Recently, I asked that sanctions be taken against Mira Andreeva for having liked social media posts which clearly concerned the atrocities committed to Ukrainians and the WTA simply indicated it would not intervene.

I am upset but remain committed to fight for my country, my family and my friends in Ukraine.

I would like to give special thanks to Switzerland and tournament organizers for their warm reception.”

Yastremska has been outspoken about her opposition to the conflict and the role of Russian tennis players in the sport, like many other Ukrainian players on the tour. Wimbledon 2023 semifinalist Elina Svitolina refused to shake hands with Belarusian Victoria Azarenka and has stated that she will do so in the future. The WTA has supported this decision by stating that handshakes are a personal choice, and Lesia Tsurenko has stated that playing against Russians is “difficult.”

Now the world no.145, the Ukrainian played her last match on the 24^th of July when she lost to world no.64 Mirra Andreeva 6-0 6-2 in the 1^st round in Lausanne (draw).

Presently, during this year the Ukrainian has managed to achieve an overall 24-21 win-loss record. Dayana Yastremska’s most significant performance of the present season was getting to the semifinal in the Reus.

Ranked world no.64 (career-high), the Russian played her last match on the 26^th of July when she was defeated by world no.155 Anna Bondar 7-6(3) 6-3 in the 2^nd round in Lausanne (draw).

Currently, during this year the Russian has a 29-5 match record. Andreeva clinched 2 titles in 2023 Chiasso and Bellinzona.

Dayana Yastremska and Mirra Andreeva fought against each other just once. Their head to head is 1-0 for Andreeva. When they played, Mirra Andreeva won 6-0 6-2 in the 1^st round in Lausanne (Ladies Open Lausanne) on the 24^th of July 2023.
