Naomi Osaka’s sister Mari to play the 1st round of the Miami Open

Naomi Osaka's sister will face another wildcard in the 1st round at the Miami Open.

Mari and Naomi Osaka

The tennis fans in Miami will have the opportunity to see the match of Osaka on Tuesday in the Grandstand. However, this time it won’t be Naomi Osaka, but her sister Mari.

The Story

Ranked no.338, Mari (22) is the older sister of Naomi. She has never managed to win a match at WTA level, and she lost 6-0 6-0 in the only match that she played this year in the 1st round of Newport Beach. She scored only 16 points during that match (see stats).

The Miami Open organization was criticized by many for granting the wildcard to the main draw to Naomi’s sister, but for others, it made sense from a “box office” point of view.

Mari was lucky in her draw since she will face another wildcard, the 16-year-old, and world no.205 Whitney Osuigwe that is the favorite to reach the second round.

There is no head to head record between Mari Osaka and Whitney Osuigwe at the moment.
