18-year-old Bianca Andreescu wins the title in Indian Wells

The Canadian teenager stuns Angelique Kerber in the final in 3 sets

Bianca Andreescu wins the title in Indian Wells

Bianca Andreescu makes history in Indian Wells to win the title at just 18 years of age on Sunday.

The final

Bianca was opposed to the 3-times slam champion Angelique Kerber. Even if there was a big difference in the rankings (Andreescu was no.60 while Kerber was ranked 8 at the beginning of the tournament), there was the feeling that the young Canadian could pull another upset in the desert after she already beat the likes of Garbina Muguruza and Elina Svitolina.

Bianca started the final in the best possible way after she broke Angelique in the very 1st game. That was enough for the teenager to win the opening set 6-4.

The German stormed back in the 2nd set when she conquered the decisive break in the 4th game (3-1) before winning 6-3.

The affair went to the decider, and once again, it was Angelique to take the lead after breaking Bianca in the 5th game. However, the youngster didn’t give up, and she stormed back to win the following 3 games (2 breaks) and lead 5-3.  The drama unfolded in the 9th game when Andreescu was unable to convert 3 championship points before being broken. At that point, it was expected an implosion from Bianca that instead was strong enough to keep her nerves, break again Kerber and make history after winning this unexpected title. The final score was 6-4 3-6 6-4, and the match ended after 2 hours and 18 minutes.

After this title, Bianca will gain 36 places in the rankings to be the world no.24. Even more strikingly, she will be the world no.5 in the year to date rankings.

The sky is the limit.
