Throughout his trophy-filled 23-year career, Novak Djokovic has played every scenario imaginable on a tennis court, but he claims to have never faced a player quite like Carlos Alcaraz. On Centre Court on Sunday, Alcaraz, 36, dethroned the Serb, who he subsequently compared to a mix of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and himself. Alcaraz went on to win the gripping Wimbledon final.

Achieving control over it proved to be beyond even his abilities, as was his attempt to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam victories and achieve a record-equaling eighth Wimbledon victory and fifth consecutive victory.

Djokovic commented:

“I didn’t expect him to play so well this year on grass, but he’s proven he’s the best player in the world. I haven’t played a player like him ever, to be honest. I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, and myself. I would agree with that.

He’s got basically the best of all three worlds. He’s got this Spanish bull mentality, fighting spirit and incredible defence that we’ve seen with Rafa. I think he’s got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands.
