Before the start of this edition in Indian Wells, Naomi Osaka had to fight for her world no.1 rank against 4 players: Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova (see article). However, things changed.
Kvitova, Stephens out
The scenario is much simpler already after the 2nd round. Following their early demises, Petra Kvitova and Sloane Stephens are already out from racing for the top rank (at least for this week).
Pliskova out
Karolina won her first match in Indian Wells, but if she conquers the title, she will have 5930 points. However, after Osaka reached the 3rd round in the desert, she will have at least 5936 points by the end of the week if she loses the next match.
Halep
Simona is the only player that can challenge Naomi for the top spot of the rankings this week.
The Romanian can become the new world no.1 if
- She wins the title, and Naomi doesn’t reach the final;
- She is the runner-up, but Naomi doesn’t win her next match.
Osaka has considerable chances to remain no.1 after this week. Still, this is very much game on!
