Federer defends Kyrgios for his underarm serve against Nadal

Roger supports Kyrgios after he tried to surprise Nadal with his underarm serve

Kyrgios underarm serve

Roger Federer is completely different than Kyrgios on court. The Swiss sensation is well-known for being a gentleman and a crowd pleaser while the Australian is widely considered as the “bad boy” of tennis. Nevertheless, the Swiss often defends Kyrgios from various critics.

Nick won a fantastic match against Rafael Nadal in Acapulco to be heavily criticized by the King of Clay for his behavior (see article).

“He disrespects everyone.” Nadal attacks Kyrgios

The underarm serve

The Australian caused also some controversy for trying to surprise Nadal with an underarm serve. In fact, the world no.2 is well known for stationing “miles” behind the baseline when returning. In truth, many people were wondering why no one tried the underarm serve against Rafa to break his rhythm. At the end of the day, it was Kyrgios to try it without much success, but that drew some critics.

There is no shame in trying that. FEDERER

During a recent interview, when asked about Nick’s underarm serve against Nadal, Federer replied

“Especially when guys are hugging the fence in the back. From that standpoint, a player shouldn’t be ashamed to try it out. You just look silly if you miss it sometimes. But why not try it?

The problem is in practice, you never really try it. When you come out in the big stage in front of a full crowd, it’s tricky to pull off.”
