Smooth stuff for team USA as both Serena and Venus Williams win their matches in straight sets.
Serena had to battle in the first set against world no. 197 María Irigoyen to finally win 7-5 6-0. Venus had a much easier life against world no.121 Paula Ormaechea (6-3 6-2).
According to Venus the score-line has been too tough no her opponent “There were a lot of deuce games, and she really competed well, and then really started staging a comeback from 5-0 in the second, so I never felt like she was going to give up, and I felt like I really had to do something to take the match, but it was a good feeling to get the US to 1-0,”
Team USA now leads 2-0 and they are widely expected to win the tie without losing a match (with the exception of dead rubbers).
