It’s Novak Djokovic again!
The world no.1 makes history once again after defeating Andy Murray in the final at Melbourne Park. This is Djokovic’s 5th Australian Open after winning in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013. With this win Nole has 8th slams equaling huge names such as Rosewall, Perry, Lendl, Connors and Agassi.
The final
The final against Andy Murray was a bit strange and it lasted 2 (very long) sets. In fact, the couple exchanged the first 2 sets both at the tie-break. The Serb won the first set 7-6 (5) after 72 minutes while Murray won the second set 7-6 (4) in 80 minutes. Since the first 2 sets lasted 2 hours and 32 minutes we were expecting another very long final, but that didn’t really happened. Murray broke Djokovic immediately in the first game of the third set to hold serve and lead 2-0 then…. he disappeared! The Scot won just 1 of the following 13 games to finally lose the match in 4 set with the score of 7-6 (5) 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-0.
Murray
During the ceremony Andy said “I’d like to congratulate Novak on his fifth Australian Open. Fantastic. Well done. I’d also like to thank everyone who came out the whole fortnight.
I’ve had amazing support here and it’s been probably my most consistent grand slam over my career, but I just haven’t been able to win, but I’ve had fantastic support, so thanks for that. I’d also like to thank my team, who are over down that end. We put in a lot of hard work to try and get back in that position after a difficult year.
We couldn’t do it tonight but I’m a little bit closer than I was a few months ago. I’d also like to say thanks to the ex-players who have come to watch the last few weeks. It’s so amazing to play in front of all these great players. It’s a real privilege. I’ll try and come back next year and hopefully have a slightly different outcome in the final.”
Djokovic
Nole was as classy as ever during the speech “Firstly I want to return the favor and thank Andy for a great tournament. I want to wish you all the best for the end of the season. Most of all I want to congratulate you and Kim on your engagement and wish you a wonderful wedding and many kids.”
