Murray reaches the Australian Open final

What a great tournament for Andy Murray. The Scot has managed to get through a tough draw to reach the final in Melbourne facing a tricky test in the semifinal against an in-form Tomas Berdych .

In the semi the Czech won the first set only at the tiebreak, but generally speaking his tennis was far superior than Murray’s in the opener.  Tomas was expected to keep his run also in the following sets, but the Czech surprised to implode and lose the 2nd set at 0. The pendulum shifted dramatically and Murray wasn’t the underdog anymore , but he gained a strong upper hand to finally win the match 6-7 (6) 6-0 6-3 7-5 in 3 hours and 16 minutes.

Match Stats

Andy scored 139 points vs. Berdych’s 118. Tomas failed completely on his serve (5 aces and 6 double faults) to be broken 6 times! On the other side Murray fired 15 aces (2 double faults) to drop the serve just once. Match Stats.

Match Stats Andy Murray vs, Tomas Berdych

Murray: I was tentative at the beginning

Andy commented “I thought the beginning of the match he started out well. I was a little bit tentative at the beginning and getting used to his ball. He hits the ball extremely hard and flat. At the start I felt like I was on the back foot a little bit. Towards the end of the first set I started to come into it more, be more aggressive. Then second set I just picked up from how I was playing at the end of the first. I felt like I could have won the first set. Obviously had some chances there. I was extremely aggressive in the second set. Managed to run away with it.”

Berydch: I am very disappointed

Tomas was having a great tournament and he felt he also had a shot at the title “I’m very disappointed to lose this match. It was a big match. I just need to come back stronger and get myself better for it, and that’s it. What was the difference? I had one bad set for the second set, and that’s it. I was just trying to get my chances, trying to fight for it, but as I said, it was not enough and I’m very disappointed with it.”

This is Murray’s 8th slam final, the 4th in Melbourne. The Scott has never won an Australian Open so far. He will play either Djokovic or Wawrinka in final.
