Berdych finally beats Nadal

What a day for Tomas Berdych!

The Czech reaches the Australian Open semifinal after defeating Rafael Nadal in 3 sets. Tomas was 18-3 down against Rafa (H2H) after losing 17 consecutive matches (!!!). The last time Berdych defeated Nadal was back in 2006!!!

Surprisingly Tomas didn’t have many problems in beating Rafa in Melbourne. He won an easy first set (6-2); he even bagelled Rafa in the second set (6-0!). Tomas had a match only the third set when he won at the tiebreak. The final score was 6-0 6-2 7-6 (5).

Berdych:  Everything was working

Tomas commented “Everything was working. I was able to execute it really well. But until the last point you can’t think about anything else. You have to really keep going until the last one. When it’s done, it’s done. It’s great.

I might be thinking about it and enjoying the time probably till tomorrow morning. When I wake up, I need to get myself ready for another one. There is a still long way to go in this tournament, and I need to be ready for it.”

Rafa: It wasn’t my day

Nadal commented “It just was not my day. I didn’t play with the right intensity, with the right rhythm, and the opponent played better than me. You have to play well to win against a player like Tomas. I didn’t play my best today. He played better than me and that’s it. That’s sport.

Sometimes, almost every time, it is simple: the player who plays better, the player who is able to maintain the better rhythm, the better concentration, play with less mistakes, is the player who has more success. And today this player has been Tomas.”

The semis vs. Murray

Tomas will play Andy Murray in the semifinal . Head to head is 6-4 for Berdych that has won the last 2 matches.

Prediction: Somebody in 5 sets… we pick Murray… just because we can! A difficult one.
