Denis Shapovalov impresses in Rotterdam with a great straight-sets win over Tomas Berdych.
The match
Even if Berdych was ranked only 59, the former world no.4 was experiencing a good start of the new season after he reached the final in Doha, the 4th round at the Australian Open, and the semifinal in Montpellier.
On the other side, before this match, Denis had a not-so-great 4-3 win-loss record in 2019 as he is trying to fine-tune his tennis and he needs to find the right balance with some changes (eg. his serve). However, against the Czech, Denis played a great match.
The Canadian won the decisive break in the first set in the 7th game (4-3) before winning 6-4. Shapovalov started well the second after he broke Berdych again in the 3rd game (2-1) before consolidating his lead (3-1). However, later Shapovalov surrendered his serve in the 6th game (3-3). That was the last moment of “glory” for Berdych as Denis conquered the following 3 games (2 breaks) to win the encounter 6-4 6-3 in just 77 minutes.

Next vs. Wawrinka
Denis will face Stan Wawrinka in the quarters. The head to head is 1-0 for Shapovalov that defeated Wawrinka in the second round in Japan last year 4-6 6-1 6-4.
