Genie Bouchard and Maria Sharapova have no problems in their opener in Melbourne.
The young Canadian defeats world no. 98 Friedsam 6-2 6-4 in 78 minutes. Genie had to battle only in the second set to win the decisive break in the 9th game. Bouchard was very happy with the results and the support “The first match of a Grand Slam is never easy, I’m happy to get through. I’m so happy to be back in Melbourne. The support here is crazy. Conditions were tough, it was a bit windy and she’s a good player. I was happy to stay solid, but there are still a lot of things to improve.”
Genie will face Kiki Bertens in the next round. This will be the first time they play each other.
Maria plays one of her terrific matches to concede just 5 games to world no. 184 Petra Martic. (6-4 6-1).
After the match Maria commented “I played an opponent that’s capable of playing very good tennis. She’s got some big weapons. For a first round against someone that’s already played a few matches, I knew I had to be really strong from the beginning.”
Maria will play world no. 150 Alexandra Panova. This will be the first time they play each other.
