Naomi Osaka had a fantastic start of 2019 after winning the Australian Open and becoming the new world no.1.
The Japanese was great in her run in Melbourne after she won 2 matches from being 1-set down against Su-Wei Hsieh and Anastasija Sevastova. In addition, Naomi impressed in the final against Petra Kvitova as she managed to regroup in the decider after she imploded in the second set when she was unable to convert 3 consecutive championship points.
The Japanese made history as she managed to become the first Asian player in history to conquer the very top of the rankings.
Osaka the player of the month
Naomi was named by the fans as the player of the month (January) according to a poll conducted by the WTA.
