Jiri Vesely is now “officially” a player to watch!
The 21-year-old played an astonishing tournament in Auckland to win his first title coming straight from the qualifications dropping just 1 set on the way against Gulbis.
The final against Mannarino lasted just over 1 hour with Vesely in absolute control of the situation. The only awkward moment for Jiri was the opening game when he was broken at 15. Then it was all about the Czech that won the match 6-3 6-2 breaking Manarrino 4 times.
Some stats
Vesely was vastly superior to score 58 points vs. Mannarino’s 38. The Czech blasted 11 aces (2 double faults); Mannarino fired only 1 ace to commit 4 double faults. In the 2nd set Vesely conceded jut 3 points on his serve. Match Stats
Vesely: it seems amazing to part of the ATP champions
Jiri was ecstatic after winning this trophy to comment “It feels amazing to be part of the ATP champions. It’s not something that everyone [can] to achieve, so I’m very grateful for that. It’s a great start for me… I can really see that it’s possible to play with the best guys and I think that’s something very important for me for the future.”
Jiri will now head to Melbourne where he is going to play Viktor Troicki in the first round. The Serbian is now playing the final in Sydney also coming from the qualifications. We won’t expect much energy in that match.
