Kiki Bertens wins her 8th career title in St. Petersburg after winning a thrilling final against Donna Vekic.
The Final
Ranked no.8, Kiki was the favorite against the Croatian (world no.30). Nevertheless, it was Donna to take the lead in the final to grab a strong 5-2 lead (2 breaks up). However, this was the first time that Vekic was playing a final in a Premier event, and so she surrendered to her nerves to win only 1 point in the following 4 games and allow Kiki to get back in the set. Eventually, the Dutch managed to win the following tiebreak at 2.
The second set was another battle, and after an exchange of breaks, it was Vekic again to implode in the last 3 games to lose the set after she was leading 4-3. The final score was 7-6 (2) 6-4, and the final ended after 1 hour and 43 minutes.
