Finally Del Potro!
Juan Martin has finally managed to get back to the tour after 10 months and he did it in style. The Argentine defeated Sergiy Stakhovsky in the Sydney opener 6-4 7-6 (4) after playing a surprisingly solid match in 81 minutes.
Del Potro: A great moment
Juan Martin was visibly emotional after defeating Stakhovsky to comment “It was a great moment for me. I think I played well in my first match after 10 months. I served well. My forehand is still working out. So that’s a good signal for the future. I need to work very hard to my backhands and my movements, but I think now is time to think about my comeback and enjoy this moment a lot.
I’ve been at home for a long time; [it was] really sad. To be honest, I didn’t expect this moment to be early in the season. I’m so happy, so glad. I would like to share with a lot of people who were behind me last year, but all of them are in Argentina. So I will meet them once again very soon.”
Next vs. Fognini
Delpo will play seed no.1 Fabio Fognini in the second round. The Argentine has definitely strong chances to win also because Fognini didn’t show to be really in-form at the Hopman Cup.
Head to head is 1-0 for Fognini, but that was in 2007 and on clay.
