Naomi Osaka wins the Australian Open

Huge, huge, and huge stuff from Naomi Osaka!!!!

The Japanese wins an incredible Australian Open final after recovering from an extremely tense situation to claim her back to back slam and become the new world no.1 when the new rankings come out on Monday.

The final

Naomi was opposed to Petra Kvitova that also had the chance to become the world on.1 if she won this final. Both players started extremely strong holding their serve easily with the notable exception of the 11th game when Petra saved 2 set points on serve. Finally, it was Osaka to win the following tiebreak.

A huge drama happened in the second set. After Petra grabbed a 2-0 lead, it was Osaka to conquer the following 4 games (4-2) to arguably glide to a smooth win. The biggest moment of the match was in the 9th game when Petra had to save 3 consecutive championship points (0-40) when she was on serve. The Czech was fantastic in holding that game (5-4) when everything looked completely lost with Naomi in full control. Suddenly, Naomi imploded to lose 5 consecutive games and find herself trailing on a 0-1 scoreline in the decider. Osaka looked completely unable to cope with her nerves, but…

That was the moment when the Japanese proved again that she has already the mentality of a champion. Naomi found her groove again to hold, break Petra again and win 3 consecutive games (3-1). That was it! Naomi didn’t look back again to win this incredible final 7-6 (2) 5-7 6-4.

After the match, Naomi looked pretty shocked and unable to process what has just happened. She will realize that pretty soon.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new world no.1, and she is there to stay for long.
