Things got really ugly for the Japanese when in the 3rd round she faced Su-Wei Hsieh that she managed to put Naomi completely off with her uncharacteristic tennis to lead 7-5 4-2 40-0. Eventually, Osaka found her way back to win the match 5-7 6-4 6-1.

Seeded no.12, Anastasija is currently under the radar at the Australian Open even if she had some good wins against Mona Barthel (6-3 6-1), the new Canadian sensation Bianca Andreescu (6-3 3-6 6-2) and the Chinese no.1 Qiang Wang (6-3 6-3).
