Carlos Alcaraz sent his mother, Virginia Garfia, a heartfelt message after winning the Mutua Madrid Open for the second time in a row. Alcaraz, who triumphed in the Caja Mágica once more by defeating German lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff on Mother’s Day in Spain, included Virginia in his victory celebrations.
In addition to speaking to her in Spanish during his speech as his champion, he also sent her a love letter on camera. While her son spoke, a visibly emotional Virginia could be seen in the stands giving her son a kiss.
During the official festivities, Alcaraz met Tennis Channel’s Prakash Amritraj on the court and discussed the background of his messages in greater detail. He claimed that having his mother in the player’s box made his most recent victory all the more special because she wasn’t frequently able to attend his games.
