Incredible performance from Naomi Osaka that under everything sort of pressure manages to win an extremely complicated match against Su-Wei Hsieh.
The match
Naomi was the clear favorite to win this 3rd round against Hsieh because of her superior firepower. However, the Taiwanese is well known for her amazing skills and uncharacteristic tennis.
Naomi started confident, and as soon as she was broken in the 6th game (2-4), she managed to stage a fierce comeback to break her opponent twice before winning 3 consecutive games and lead 5-4. Then the Japanese failed to serve out the set, and that was the moment that something broke in her performance.
Hsieh won 7 of the following 8 games to lead 7-5 4-1. Naomi committed the mistake to start to play at the same level of Hsieh (i.e., looking for variations), and that was great news for the Taiwanese. However, after when Osaka thought that everything was lost, she started to hit freely and to impose her heavy shots.
The crucial moment was when the world no.4 recovered from a desperate 2-4 0-40 scoreline (on Su-Wei serve) to break back the opponent and be back on business. Eventually, since being 1-4 down, Naomi won 11 of the following 12 games before winning 5-7 6-4 6-1 in 1 hour and 57 minutes.
