Roger Federer starts his Australian Open campaign in the best possible way with a very convincing win over Denis Istomin.
The world no.3 looked at his very best at it seemed as the only danger was ending up in self-complacency.
The match
Roger solved Istomin’ s puzzle by breaking his opponent once per set. In the first set, Roger conceded just 4 points on serve to win 6-3. In the second set, he conquered the decisive break in the 3rd game (2-1), and in the 3rd set in the 5th game (3-2). Eventually, Federer won the match 6-3 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour and 57 minutes.

I was hitting the ball pretty well. FEDERER
After the match, Roger couldn’t contain his satisfaction to comment
“I think I was hitting the ball pretty well. I think I protected my serve well, didn’t allow Denis really to get into my service games very often. I was always in the lead, as well. Obviously, that helps as I can free swing maybe a little bit more.
At the same time, I think I have to do some defense, some offense. It was a bit of everything. But I’m very happy with my first round. It’s been great. Felt the ball really good.”
Next vs. Dan Evans
Roger will face Dan Evans in the 2nd round. The head to head is 1-0 for Federer that defeated Evans in the 3rd round in Wimbledon back in 2016 6-4 6-2 6-2.
