Novak Djokovic sends heartfelt message to Andy Murray

Novak was shocked after Andy Murray's press conference about his retirement

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have played each other 36 times on the official tour.

They had lots of battles on court, and Andy won 3 of the most important matches of his life against the Serb in 2012 when he won his first slam at the US Open,  in 2013 when he conquered Wimbledon for the first time, and in 2016 when he defeated Novak in the ATP Finals in what was a sheer shootout to be the world no.1.

Despite the rivalry, Djokovic and Murray remained close friends, and Andy asked Nole to play a warm-up match at this Australian Open to test his body. Unfortunately, the response was horrible as Andy had to withdraw when he was 1-6 1-4 to later announce his imminent retirement from tennis because he struggles too much with his hip.

During a recent interview, Nole admitted that he was shaken when he listened at the news that his friend is about to pull the plug to later send a heartfelt message to the Brit.

I will always cherish our amazing matches. DJOKOVIC

Nole posted this message on the

“First time we met and played. Something was telling me back then that we’d have an amazing rivalry and experience of playing each other on the biggest stage for many years to come.

What you are trying to do is nothing short of brave and inspiring. I met with you the other day and couldn’t really verbalize my compassion for what you’re going through. As an athlete, fellow tennis player and friend, I respect and fully support you every second of this Australian Open and every next attempt to compete at the highest level. Whatever happens, I will always cherish our amazing matches over the years and be grateful for those experiences 🙏 Big hug Andy, stay strong. @andymurray
