Nicola Pietrangeli, a former Italian tennis legend, questioned Matteo Berrettini’s work ethic on February 18 and claimed that the 26-year-old was devoting himself more to advertising than tennis. Recently, Berretini and his girlfriend received criticism from tennis fans for spending the day at the beach while he was having a bad run of form.
Matteo Berrettini made the decision to highlight the constructive aspects of the criticism that was leveled at him in an interview with Eurosport on April 9. He stressed that the interest and scrutiny he attracted were evidence of how well-liked tennis is in Italy.

The World No. 22 questioned the ridiculousness of the allegations that his romance was harming his career, though. He identified the emergence of social media as the driving force behind this critique. The Italian claimed that the main thing that counts to him is being happy in his relationship.
“On dating, I struggle to answer, I can not conceive how a relationship can allow you not to do your job, but people talk. We live in the era of social media, where everyone can say anything and it seems to me as if general education has been lost. In the end, however, I am happy, this is what matters,” said Berrettini.

At the moment ranked no.22, Berrettini played his last match on the 25th of March when he was defeated by world no.55 Mackenzie Mcdonald 7-6(8) 7-6(5) in the 2nd round in Miami (draw).
Until now, during this year Berrettini achieved a 7-7 match record. Matteo Berrettini’s most significant result of this season was getting to the final in Australia.
He is also scheduled to play in Munich (BMW Open) on the 17th of April and Madrid (Mutua Madrid Open) on the 26th of April.
