Roger and Belinda down Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber at the last point

Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic win the Hopman Cup

What a day in Perth a what a (tennis) drama!

Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic defend their title in Perth beating once again Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber in the final literally “at the last ball.”

What happened?

Federer defeated Zverev 6-4 6-2 after playing one of the best tennis of his career. Roger was just perfect in every department to concede absolutely nothing to his young opponent.

In the following match, Angelique Kerber and Belinda Bencic played a high-quality contest, but eventually it was the German to win 6-4 7-6 (6).

Everything went down to the final mixed doubles. When Roger and Belinda won the first set 4-0 everything was pointing to a smooth run for Team Switzerland. However, their opponents disagreed: Sascha started to become more aggressive and Angelique was even managing to stay solid from the baseline against Federer. Team Germany won the 2nd set 4-1 to bring the contest to a dramatic decider.

The third set that went to an extremely tight tie-break. The rule of the Hopman Cup is that the breaker is won by whoever wins 5 points no matters what; if the teams are locked on a 4-4 scoreline everything is decided by the following point. This is exactly what happened with both Team Switzerland and Team Germany having a championship point in the same moment. Eventually, it was Belinda Bencic that was rock solid at the net to win one of the most remarkable points of her life. The final score was 4-0 1-4 4-3 (3).

That was great fun!
